The IAPR Godin Prize for the Scientific Psychology of Religion

The origin of the Godin Prize is a gift by Prof. Gregory Zilboorg to Prof. André Godin, who was professor of psychology of religion at the Lumen Vitae Institute in Brussels, on March 15, 1956 in order to develop studies in the psychology of religion. The name of the prize on that moment was the Quinquennial Prize for the Scientific Psychology of Religion. After the death of Prof. Godin on the 2nd of June 1997, the committee decided to change the name of the prize in the Godin Prize in honor of this distinguished man.

Till now the Godin Prize has been awarded seven times. The previous recipients of the prize and the works for which they were honored are:

1.

1967 - J.P. Deconchy for "Structure génétique de l’idée de Dieu chez des catholiques français. Garçons et filles de 8 à 16 ans."

2.

1971 - J.M. Jaspard and A. Dumoulin for "Les médiations religieuses dans l’univers de l’enfant."

3.

1976 - L. Rulla, Fr. Imoda and J. Ridick for "Structure psychologique et vocation."

4.

1986 - M.J. Lerner for "The belief in a just world. A fundamental delusion."

5.

1991 - D. Wulff for "Psychology of religion. Classic and contemporary views."

6.

1998 - S. Murken for "Gottesbeziehung und psychische Gesundheit. Die Entwicklung eines Modells und seine empirische Überprüfung."

7.

2006 - V. Saroglou for the entire body of his research and publications in many areas of personality and social psychology of religion (see: list of publications).

The Godin Prize, which amounts to € 1000,  is now incorporated in the IAPR and will be awarded at the IAPR's congresses. The prize will preferably be given to young researchers - for a monography or five  articles (published or accepted) focused on a central topic of research in the field of the psychology of religion published in the last five years before the congress.

The next Godin Prize will be awarded at the 2009 conference of the IAPR, which will take place in Vienna-Austria. Suggestions for a candidate are most welcome (self-nomination possible). Applications should include 5 copies of the book or all five articles (in case they are not published yet, please add letter of acceptance) and should be sent to Dirk Hutsebaut

In case the prize is not attributed in 2009 at the Vienna conference, the prize will be announced again for the then next conference of the IAPR.

The members of the present jury are: Nils Holm from Åbo (Finland) Halina Grzymala from Jagellonian University Krakow (Poland), Dirk Hutsebaut from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) and Ray Paloutzian, Editor of the International Journal for the Psychology of Religion (USA).
